 Apply very little pressure and make sure the bit is traveling straight.
 It is often a good idea to practice drilling holes through glass on an old aquarium to gain a feel for cracking thresholds and pressure as well as the various speeds of the drill being used.
 If the drill is tweaked to the side, a crack or clamshell-type breakage is a sure bet.
