Enjoying Key West Tarpon Fishing

For many sport lovers there is nothing more thrilling than to be in the open air with a fishing pole in hand. One adventure that is especially challenging is Key West tarpon fishing. This extremely strong species can put up a battle that will long be remembered.

There are a number of different methods used for catching a tarpon. These can be trolling, drifting, plugging, bottom or fly-fishing. One popular location for this sport is around bridges, in shallow flats, and off the beach. They are also found in deeper water. It is popular to fish in these areas when the moon is full.

This species is extremely large and puts up a real battle. Weights reported were Florida, in 1975, 243 pounds and Africa, in 2003, 286 pounds, 9 ounces. Spawning takes place in the months of April, May, and June, which is a very popular time for this sport. Imagine how many hours it took to land them.

A popular name for this species is 'Silver King'. During the migration period, it is especially popular to use a Key West Harbor charter boat to seek them out. Visitors to the area like to use this method of fishing as the gear and bait are provided as well as expert advice from the captain and crew.

Many times these fish are located in inland waters such as canals, rivers and other locations. This is because they can survive in fresh water due to what is called a swim bladder. This acts the same as a human's lungs and they can breathe oxygen.

Juvenile tarpon are often more than two feet in length, which results in a good fight after being hooked. However, due to an unusually shaped jaw it is sometimes difficult for the hook to 'set', which adds excitement to the activity. There is no doubt that key west tarpon fishing will be something to remember. This fish is strictly for sport and is not for eating.
